The name Jericoacoara, according to old fishermen, comes from the expression Jacarequara, which means ‘jacaré (alligator) lying on the sun’, due to the shape of the hill and the lighthouse as seen from the high seas. So, the name was adapted until it became Jericoacoara, or nowadays, simply “Jeri”. Come and visit the wonderful beach of Jericoacoara!
To take care of the environment, a large area surrounding Jericoacoara was named National Park of Jericoacoara.
The Ecotourism in the region attracts an increasing number of people interested in eco-walks, observation excursions and learning about conservation of local flora and fauna. The Park includes mobile white sand dunes, half-deserted beaches with clear waters, and large areas of coconut trees forming paradisiacal landscapes.
The area also includes rocky formations made by wind and water, such as “Malhada Beach”, “Pedra Furada” and “Buraco da Princesa”. On the rocky Serrote Hill you may catch sight of several bird species, some in danger of extinction.
When you arrive in Jeri, remember this is an Area of Environmental Protection and you may not throw garbage on the streets or beaches, drive beyond road limits or across the dunes, pick up sea-shells or stones.
Besides windsurf, you may perform other activities that we also organize: kite-surf, sand-board, surf, capoeira, horse-riding, buggy excursions to fresh-water lagoons, beach-volley, beach-tennis... Here you stay still only when you want to, whether on a comfortable hammock or drinking some delicious coconut-water.
Here Nature is protagonist. Come and visit the stunning beach of Jericoacoara.
The town of Jericoacoara has supermarkets, bars, cafés, varied restaurants, Internet connection, postal service, a medical center, pharmacy, laundry service, handicraft markets, horse rental stand, and clothes, photography items and souvenir shops.
When planning your trip, take into account that Jericoacoara has no banks of any kind, no ATMs (automatic teller machines or cash dispensers), no exchange agencies, and traveller’s cheques are not accepted.
